4 Little Words
I pray that I never stop being wowed by God’s Word. In a reading this morning I was blown away by just four words.
They are found in a story in the book of Matthew. It might be a familiar story.
Jesus and his disciples are on a boat on the lake. A terrible storm swells up all around them and the disciples are afraid. Jesus, however, is asleep.
The disciples wake Jesus and he calms the storm and teaches them about having faith and not being afraid.
But my four words are back at the very beginning of the story.
Jesus got into the boat AND ➡️ his disciples followed him.
"His disciples followed him."
They followed him and then found themselves in the middle of a terrifying storm.
Following Jesus does NOT mean we get to avoid all the storms in life. Quite the opposite here. Sometimes following Jesus means going right into a storm.
But the one who calms the storms is always with us. That’s the point. He can calm the storms out there but what’s more he can calm the storms inside of us.
His words to the disciples are true for us.
Have faith. Believe God is with us. He will never leave us or forsake us.
Do not fear. The God of the universe is always in control. Regardless of what’s going on around us, he is always on his throne. We can’t always control what’s going “out there” but I always have the option to let him calm my heart and quiet the storm in me.
“Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”” Matthew 8:23-27 NIV https://www.bible.com/bible/111/mat.8.23-27.niv
