Day 4 - The Constant in the Chaos - A Devotional
Pray - Take a moment to pray as you enter into this time with God. Ask His Holy Spirit to reveal truth to you through His Word.
Read - Philippians 4:6-7
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Reflect - This is one of those verses that often gets quoted out of context. Most people only know the very first part - “Do not be anxious about anything,”
Have you used that phrase before? Ever had it used on you?
That’s one of those annoying “things Christians say” that can leave the hearer more frustrated than before. In context it is a foundational verse for us though. So it’s important to know the whole thing.
This entire devotional is about making sure we have a good foundation so that in every season of life we know what real truth is. And there is a lot of great truth in these words in Philippians.
It’s actually a bit of something I like to call spiritual math. When you break it down here is what you get:
Presenting my requests to God (Prayer + petition) + thanksgiving = the peace of God guarding my heart and mind = the ability to not be anxious about anything.
Or, the kindergarten version:
Prayer + thanksgiving = peace of God (see also no anxiousness)
See. And you thought you’d never use math again. :)
Get Real - The thing about math is it’s just true. One plus one equals two. It just does. Hopefully we can all agree on that! ;)
How can we get to the same place with God’s math? With His promises?
Do you believe that being thankful and presenting requests to God will bring you peace and remove anxiousness? Why or why not?
Where in your life do you have anxiousness or worries?
List out these areas.
Now take each area and write out a prayer to God for each. Don’t forget to include thankfulness. Here’s an example:
Lord, I am anxious about this upcoming doctor’s appointment. I pray that all will go smoothly and test results will come back clear. Thank you for doctors and medical technology. Thank you for the truth that you will be with me and walk me through whatever may come. Thank you for your peace in this, and every situation.
Pray - Finish your time today praying through these areas. Don’t forget to thank Him for Him, and thank him for His promises.
