The Constant in the Chaos - A Devotional
It's a hard season.
The specific details of what is making it hard vary from person to person.
It's a season of change.
Things have changed. For some people it feels like everything has changed.
So, is there anything that hasn't changed?
Whether we think it is cliche, simplistic, obvious or obtuse...
the only thing that is constant, comforting and always true is the Word of God.
Maybe that's the whole point. As everything else shifts like sand under our feet, we are left to look for that which is stable. That which withstands the tests of time, tribulation and turmoil. And God’s Word to us certainly does all of that and more.
It’s the only firm foundation for us on the roller coaster of life. On our good days and hard days. In the midst of our wins and not so much wins.
The anchor that will hold us in place is the Word of God. Over the next few weeks we’ll take a look at some verses we can cling to in this, and any, season. These passages are foundations for us no matter what storms the future may bring.
Pray - Take a moment to pray as you enter into this time with God. Ask His Holy Spirit to speak to you through His Word.
Read - Matthew 7:24-27
The Wise and Foolish Builders - Part 1
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Reflect - If you close your eyes can you picture these two houses? One built on a foundation of solid rock and the other built on sand.
Before the storm even comes can you see differences?
What does the inside of a house built on sand look like?
What differences do you picture in a house built on rock?
Get Real - Which foundation is your life built on? Do some rooms have more stability than others? Are you trusting God and His Word in the area of finances but not in your relationships?
Take a moment and list out the different areas of your life. (relationship with God, family, friends, work, finances, time, entertainment/recreation, etc)
What does the foundation look like in each of these areas?
Have an honest conversation with God about what you see. Journal or jot down a few key words for each area of your life.
Pray - As you close your time today thank God for His Word and your relationship with him. Thank him for the areas where your foundation is strong and ask him for strength to build stronger foundations where you need them.
